Colour Blocking My Main Living Space
The main living space in my apartment is a large rectangle which includes the living and dining rooms, with the kitchen as a square off to the side of the rectangle. A kitchen bar extends into the rectangular living space with an open kitchen doorway to its left, making an open kitchen area. To the left of the kitchen doorway is the fireplace wall, with the fireplace extending out to the living room area. When facing the kitchen/fireplace wall, I have sliding doors to the sunroom on the left and the only straight flat wall of the room on the right. The long wall opposite the kitchen/fireplace wall has a window at either end, and, for some reason, a shift in the elevation of the wall close to the middle of the length of wall.
Currently, all of the living space is one colour, a greenish-taupe, except for the fireplace which is more of an olive green. It looks really nice, but in the sunlight the green in the greenish-taupe is accentuated and becomes too green for me. In incandescent light, it looks great. But because of the “too green for me” thing, I’ve decided to change things up. I’ve also decided to try colour blocking (per wall, not within a wall). I’ve decided on a brown/grey-brown colour scheme and will use light blue and dark brown as accent colours:
These are like the colours I’m already using for my furniture so I should I like them π I’m going to use Neutral Wheat on the the long wall with the elevation change and also on the features that extend into the living room (i.e. the kitchen bar and the fireplace). For the remaining walls, I’m going to use the Unicorn White; this will include the side walls and the recessed areas of the kitchen/fireplace wall. I’m going to continue that idea into the kitchen, painting side walls Unicorn White and the remaining walls Neutral Wheat. I had considered painting the elevations of the long wall different colours but decided against it in the end.
There’s a fair amount of painting to be done since, in addition to the living room, dining room and kitchen, I’m also going to paint the hallways in the apartment. I should note – I’m a super slow painter and can’t cut-in for the life of me, so when I refer to painting something, I really mean the painter I hire will be painting something. In fact, I’ve already contacted the painter and am now looking forward to it being done in a couple of days instead of a couple of weeks (or more!) π
